Accumulations

The general term accumulation means putting something on a pile, in the hydrological context it refers to artificial lakes intended to meet the needs of users (water supply, irrigation, etc.), while in economic terms it means financial gain, i.e. the income remaining after deduction of consumption, which is stored as savings or as an investment for the purpose of economic gain. Accumulation in the sculptural sense of Matej Vuković evokes blue stylized clouds, located in the courtyard of Ilica 37, in front of and inside the exhibition space, originally in the function of a repository. The organic forms associated with water clusters actually form an empty volume given that their basic shape, i.e. interior, is achieved by joining inflated balloons, wrapping them in cellophane, dressing them in fiberglass and finally applying glass mat and polyester. The use of artificial material, the lack of internal content of sculptures and ultimately their accumulation, associatively lead to unnecessary overproduction of insatiable capitalist demand, warning of the unsustainability of continuous exploitation and its consequences, which in the long run prevents further progress and development. Faced with recent crises and a prevailing sense of existential fear, in addition to the material piling, there is also emotional accumulation, which leads to unreasonable and ineffective attempts to avoid unpredictable situations. Inverted clouds that stand upright on the ground also insinuate the absurd and vain need for the accumulation of various objects, finances or information that exceeds the needs of the individual, while questioning the meaning of man’s unsatisfied tendency to accumulate.
