Column

The performer places a roll of paper on the floor.
Before pushing the roll to unravel it, he gently squeezes it with his hands, as if he wishes to show it who’s the boss between the two of them. Following his assertion of dominance, the roll slowly spreads out across the road. The performer grips the edges and decisively does The first fold. The first break is precise and elegant. Just before performing The second fold, he adjusts the paper to accurately continue the rhythm started by the first fold. The goal is a repetition of phenomena (rhythm) despite differing circumstances (the number of folds). An imitation of the same gesture is repeated at The third and The fourth fold. Afterwards, he adjusts the paper once more and simultaneously executes two folds; as the paper gets more and more crumpled, our performer, no matter how hard he tries to inscribe the same motions into it, notices that his desire for equivalency confirms the distinction. The more violent breaks the paper suffers, the harder the performer struggles against its nature which doesn’t allow him repetition, but instead each fold gives birth to distinctions which nullify the performers apparent superiority over the paper. The performer finishes the folding. The folds have mutually folded and have intertwined themselves in the process of creation. A rhythmic harmony of breaks is all that remains on the floor.
The performer leaves.
