A flash of light in the dark / An echo of a voice in the silence

The basic physical characteristics of sound and light, which enable and support the artistic appropriation of their integrable proximities and opposites, are as follows: wavelength, frequency, and amplitude. Sound is a mechanical longitudinal wave caused by the vibrations of matter, while light is an electromagnetic transverse wave made possible by the interaction of electric and magnetic fields. In her performative work The Flash of Light in Darkness / The Echo of a Voice in Silence, Maja Rivić examines the relationship between light and darkness, shadow versus sound and silence, and as Vladimir Devide writes: ”a flash of light in the darkness and an echo of a voice in the silence, merge in a common center”. In the work, thought, word, silence, darkness, voice and light meet, connect and intertwine. There is a transformative cyclical structure during which a thought that gives birth to a word is conceived in the dark, revived by a voice, which induces light, which reawakens a new thought, and thus closes the circle, implying at the same time a cyclical existence (sa sāra). Light (Skt. Prabhāsvaratā; Jpn. Kōmyō) is a central term found in major Buddhist traditions and is most commonly used to describe the inherent characteristics of purity of mind, the realization of which is the goal of meditative practice. Within some Buddhist philosophical systems light is increasingly associated with emptiness, ultimate reality, and the illumination of the mind. Zen-Buddhist thought about the essence of being and nature, the philosophy of existence and coexistence, materializes in a nuclear-condensed form of haiku poetry, and staged through everyday images of coexistence of man, other beings and nature, becomes a word that catalyzes space for understanding, empathy and cognition.
