FREESTYLE

FREESTYLE is an exhibition by second-year undergraduate students of the Art Education programme at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb, showcasing the finest works created within the course Graphics and Applied Graphics 1 during the 2022/2023 academic year. As the title suggests, these are thematically unrestricted works, encompassing learning, exploration, and experimentation in the medium of graphics, primarily using the linocut technique. In this context, graphic art is approached as an open discipline—vital and ready to offer something new. The motifs, shaped by the interests of the authors, span a diverse range, varying from flora and fauna, (self-)portraits, and textiles to interpretations of existing visual identities. Some works maintain a representative character as they develop, while others transition into gradual abstraction through further exploration. A portion of the authors, through saturation and repetition, ventures into deconstruction. What unifies this graphic collection are the principles and methods that emphasize the expressive possibilities of the graphic technique of relief printing: various types of indentation and form creation, diverse overlaps and printing methods, matrix carving, as well as the use of color. This free style thus provides an excellent opportunity to acquaint oneself with the youngest generation of artists.
