HOW TO PROTEST

In 2025 Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested just days before the upcoming presidential election campaign in which he was to be the main opponent to the current president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This resulted in the unification of the opposition across the political spectrum and a wave of protests that haven’t subsided to this day. Mithat Can Demir observed these events from a distance, as police cracked down with increasing force on many young protesters. These protests, just like the protests of Gezi Park in 2013, represent an eruption of an ongoing social movement in Istanbul. The protests vary in scale but always persist, and as the government gradually break down democratic institutions and abuses its power, so does the resistance reclaim its right to use force. Looking back on his experience gathered while living in Istanbul, Can Demir tries to aid the safety of his comrades but in exhibiting his work he goes further than what he initially set out to do.
