Background

Every subject in space, whether it is you or he or it, “owns” the same space in which it is located, the surface on which it moves, the soil in which it develops and grows. It may be a nutrient medium for the growth of organisms and their tissues in Petri dishes or an auditory stimulus that accompanies visual experiences. The definition of the foundation is a place upon which something rests, a passive participant of active progression. It can be smooth, sandy, abrasive, cold, decrepit, soft. It can be sharp, reasonable. Calm and scathing.
The ambient installation Foundation by Mia Maraković is precisely this – a witness to the process of creation, to fallen stains of paint, spilled coffee, sweat drops, dictated by the gallery space, creating a sense of weightlessness in the place of visible walls, floors, ceiling and entrance. In such a cluster Mia intervenes by leaving a written trace, a deliberate intervention, acting at the same time as randomly as the paint stains: traces of emotions that unintentionally fall into the surface of the fabric.
The foundation of the painting process is a covering upon which all activity happens, it is the essence of what has been painted, a witness to the process. How then does the foundation of the subjective self look like? How do I intervene in it, what is it made of, do I even pay attention to how it changes and how it affects the tissue of living I am trying to create? Mirror, diary, statement. Question?
