By arranging various fragments such as pieces of canvas, slats, plastic, paper and other, often waste, line-drawn materials, Gordana Bakić achieves a visual movement of work towards the viewer whose perception she subtly plays with. The artist stores elements of the work like fragile parts of personal memory, and by reusing these building materials in different circumstances, their recontextualization is achieved, while opening to the fluidity of interpretation. The author continuously re-examines space, physical and mental, creating almost surreal landscapes or, as she calls them – mental dioramas – while turning the gallery into a sliding determinant between an exhibition and work space. The combination of an ambient installation and a spacious drawing gives an insight into the intuitive creative flow of the author who, in complete contrast to the hectic way of life and work, patiently like a weaver, arranges meticulous elements creating a monumental balanced whole. In the previously realized works (Regeneration, Current Spaces, City Iconography II 1950-2000+, City Visions), but also in the materials she uses, the author’s experience of working as a theater set designer is recognized. With a deep understanding of space, evident also through the subtle fusion of light and shadow, and a balanced gradation of materials, she achieves a cohesion of work with the environment, while giving the impression of a theater stage moving. The specificity of Gordana Bakić’s work is manifested in its transformativeness, through different meanings, but also through the spatial ability of constant biomorphic adaptation to the environment in which it is located and slowly takes over, while her role is intertwined between artist and builder of magical worlds.
