Sculptures in Neutral Buoyancy

Every existing being, inanimate object in space, grain of sand, or speck of dust moves, walks, or flies carried by air currents, existing in the physical world with mass that irreversibly adheres to Earth’s spherical pull under constant gravitational force. In the exhibition Sculptures in Neutral Buoyancy, Petar Popijač presents a contemplation and exploration of the absence of statics, consisting of an aquarium installation, a video work, and an interactive kinetic installation. These works emerge from the artist’s doctoral research as a further development of an existing concept.
Petar’s work explores new ways of conceptualizing and creating sculptural forms beyond the conventions of statics. His sculptures, presented in aquarium installations, are designed to be exhibited within a liquid medium, manipulating their properties so that they never touch the base of the pedestal, giving the illusion of levitation. The accompanying video work showcases segments of the artistic methodology and the realization of forms in diving conditions of neutral buoyancy beneath the sea, aiming to redefine and question the formative nature of modeled sculpture while emphasizing the idea that there is no state of absolute stillness for objects in the universe.
The physical reality of the model in which we exist shows that, as much as statics may seem like an imperative, the multitude and sum of all motions to which we are subject—without our own influence or conscious action—make our existence multifaceted but never static.
