A wooden star made of smooth elements that slide over one another, disintegrating at the slightest wrong touch, might seem like a fun object, a pastime well spent. Yet in reality, it leaves behind frayed nerves and beads of sweat gathering at the temples. Once reassembled, it remains a trophy of mental triumph and an intriguing form, nestled among the dusty grains of other wooden surfaces.
The exhibition Stega by Sanjin Vinković modularly arranges cubic wooden elements joined at right angles, which, by branching their forms, pave paths for new elements to join. This concept is inspired by encounters with wooden IQ puzzles—separate pieces that unite into a whole, their integrity fragile, and their assembly/disassembly dependent on logical principles of the folds in the brain’s cortex. The functionality of such wooden objects lies in their purpose for play and contemplation, with a context that is mathematical in nature yet artistic, while their shape and form are undeniably sculptural in their perception.
Despite the rigid spatial perimeters, the question arises: can a single feathery wrong touch collapse the carefully assembled structure, forcing the culprit into hours of sweaty hands and mental effort, while the initial form remains an elusive challenge?
