Young, Wild, Sleep-Deprived

Community. Individual. Leisure. Rebellion. The photographs of Rijeka-born Vid Barić, a culturologist and journalist for the Zagreb-based daily “Jutarnji list,” reflect the everyday life of the subcultural layer of contemporary youth.

In their documentary-artistic function, treating the image as a phenomenon representing shared reality, these photographs capture moments from the real, unscripted world where the protagonists are—young people. Caught in the moment, driven by a primal urge for rebellion, and under the wing of music as the eternal symbol of subcultural ideologies, the “wild and sleep-deprived” navigate a divided reality.

Through spontaneous or intentional framing, the photo series “Young, Wild, Sleep-Deprived” reflects a group in action or an individual as an allegory of the whole, telling a story of the camaraderie among friends, acquaintances, passersby, and musical protagonists of the contemporary “New Wave.” Uncensored, raw, and loud, Vid Barić’s photographs stand as current narratives.
